Dear Dr. HAIM,

Thanks for the great email, I am writing back to assure that your project a heart for peace is the real winner. Its fixing our human relations by fixing the hearts of our beloved ones. I told you my true feelings not to begin a contest, but to tell you and the great man Pr. Rein, that even for one in my background, this project has spread its spirit into us. I and my family will always have your message within our hearts. And for being ready to move forward and go beyond, truly I already did.

Again, i would like to help in any way that supports your efforts to communicate your message to both peoples.

I attached you more two pictures: one with his mother and grandparents and the other with his great nurse at NICU Danelia.

Warm Regards.

Dear Saif,

First I am very happy Saleh is fine, he wears a beautiful name and will be I am sure able to behave in accordance with the meaning of his name. Many thanks for your e mail, I fully agree with you people of good will from both side share the responsibility to develop mutual respect and trust.
A child is a child and for me every child deserves the same level of care. So it is normal Saleh was treated as every other child in Hadassah. Hadassah logo means a bridge for peace. It is also why we are demanding concerning the training of Palestinian doctors, we accept only good candidates willing to complete their training to state of the art technics. My criteria as Pr. Rein one is simple « would we feel comfortable to have our child treated by this doctor once he has been trained » if the answer is yes we offer at least a 1 year training and we give a grant..
Based on what is on-going in some Arabic countries and despite a lot of difficulties, I believe that civil society has a role to play in developing mutual recognition which paves the way for Peace.
Your family has been expelled from Jaffa many years ago, it has also been the destiny of so many Jews who had to leave Arabic countries should it be Algeria, Egypt… We should not begin a contest, unfortunately concerning the number of killed people and the number of people having to leave their countries Jews are going to win.
I think that, even if it is a part of everyone history, we have to move forward and to go beyond, and I am convinced that you are ready to do it as we do it with A Heart for Peace.
I am happy you give me the authorization to present Saleh history to people.

I would love to meet you and Saleh and his mother.

Best regards

Dr. Muriel Haim

Objet : RE: My baby were diagnosed with a heart defects (TGA & VSD)

Dear Dr M Haim,

First of all I would like to thank you and all the people at Heart for Peace and Hadassah, for giving us back all our hopes and dreams for our lovely baby SALEH “sure with God’s help and bless ». You cannot imagine how much grateful and thankful we are. We named him SALEH, it means the good man in Arabic, which by God’s bless and your help all, our Saleh will have the chance to live to be a good man.

Our baby underwent first stage open heart operation. A shunt has been made for his heart, we supposed to go home in few days…later maybe within a one year, the baby will undergo the second stage operation « the main operation » for final fixing as Dr Eldad and his team told us.

Secondly, I would like to share with you some of our experience here at Hadassah. Around 3 months ago when i watched you and Prf. REIN speaking about heart for peace project on YouTube and what the great things you are doing through this project and why are you doing this… for me and my wife it was a window of hope that have been opened for us. To be honest, for the first time I only was forcing that my baby has a chance to be treated at one of the best medical centres in the region, regardless my inadequate financial resources.

For a young man who his grandparents were expelled from their own village in 1948 nearby Jaffa and then, who was raised and lived in a refugee camp for around 28 years with all misery, suffer and pain there. A young man who had nothing to do or believe in but his education, so he can hope for a better future far away of this crazy area. For that man it was hard to believe that those people behind the seperation wall, whom their  grandparents expelled my grandparents and whom their army humiliating us daily on the military checkpoints over all the West Bank, will treat my baby as they treat their own babies, but it was my only hope. In West Bank and especially for people in refugee camps, the only image for Israelis is killing, destruction and taking lives not saving ones.

After around 33 days of staying in Hadassah, even for a well-educated man like me, who knows how things are going in political context… it was shocked:  » are those the same people whom we know as Israelis?! »,  » are they the same who make our life in west bank as worse as no human can handle?! ». In Hadassah i found the true answer. Yes they both Israelis but they are not the same. All that war and what it brings to both of us « hatery and killing » is blinding us from a simple fact that we are both human beings, who have the right to live in a dignity and safe. Bottom line, the most important thing we came with out of this experience, is that there is a different face for the Israeli society as we know. And i committed myself to spread this out in my society «not all Israelis as we know », I will tell our story to each one we know back home. I already posted your project page link on my Facebook as a simple start.

In Hadassah, our baby was treated in an equal manner as other Israeli sick babies. The doctors and nurses were kind and very supportive. They were not only professional but very human too. I remember how the nurses in the neonatal care unit were supporting my wife when she was crying, I and she were alone, no other family members were around, but those doctors and nurses were there for us. Their smiles and kindness were the fuel of our journey. Some names cannot be forgotten: Dr.Ellite, Dr. Rami, Head nurse Olga, nurse Danelia, and nurse Ghdfa all at NICU…, Dr. Rein Dr.Nael, Dr. Julus  » he is a great smiley doctor », nurse Ifat, and for sure surgeon Dr. Eldad and Dr. Ayman..All will be always in our hearts.

Finally, Dr. Haim… after all what we have been through. I rewatch your YouTube video again… this time i felt really different…  My honoured Dr., this time your words turned a reality , you said « who will depart with her healthy baby in her arms, she carries a piece of peace in her heart », yes my honoured Dr. yes indeed…. i can tell you we not only carry a piece of peace in our heart, but a whole heart of peace.

Dear Prof. Rein  you were our saver, although you said at the video  » it would be utopian to say that this action A heart for peace is made to show the way to a better future,  but I think first it’s a humanitarian action ». I would say its not utopian to say so…. indeed it shows us a better way other than killing and hating each other. A better way to a better future. This way is the humanitarian action, simply because by this way we both feel our humanity and discover that we have more similarities as humans than as enemies. The prove is that all the Jews medical people here served once as military officers at IDF, the same persons who are great doctors and nurses, but in the first job we were their enemies and in the second one we were both simply humans. I think politics people shall restart here. My dear Prf. Rein I am sure we can built a better future by your great job in saving lives more than other people’s job of taking them in both sides.

Dear Dr.Haim, For the pictures, sure I am ready to send you all what you need. I am ready to help in any way in supporting and spreading the spirit of this great action. I have good local and international connections, since my voluntary work at the International Exchange Program during my university study. Let me know how can I help.

I will send you the pictures in a separate email.

Looking forward to meet you and introduce you to our boy Saleh.

Your sincerely.

Saif and the Family.

Dear Saif
I know from Pr. Rein that everything went fine for your family and I am very happy for the 3 of you.
Can you help A Heart for Peace by sending us  photos of your baby with you and your wife with his first name (for confidentiality reason we never give the last name of our patients, we can even change the first name if you prefer) and allowing us to put  photo of your baby  with and/or without you and your wife on our web site and on the social network
it is important for 2 reasons
you already know the first one as you found A heart for Peace through social network
the second one it helps us raising money to pay for surgery for other children who need it as your baby

Looking forward for your answer

best regards and a lot of happiness

MANY PARTICIPANTS ATTENDED THE SYMPOSIUM WHICH TOOK PLACE IN THE “PALAIS DU LUXEMBOURG” ON FEBRUARY 5th, 2013

The conference started around 4PM by a Press conference:

« Medicine, a way to rebuild dialogue V”

With the participation of:

-  Thierry Binisti, movie maker

– Professor J.J. Azariah REIN, Department head of the department of pediatric cardiology at Hadassah hospital, Jerusalem, Israel –

- Doctor Muriel Haïm, President founder of a Heart for Peace.

Around 6PM other speakers joined:

-  Mrs Esther Sittler, Sénatrice of Bas Rhin, Vice-president of the Group France ‐ Israel -  François ZIMERAY, Ambassador for the Human rights

‐ Jean Mattern, Writer

- Olivier Nakache movie maker

De gauche à droite: Olivier Nakache, Thierry Binisti, Esther Sittler, François Zimmeray, Professeur Jean-Jacques Rein et Jean Mattern

From left to right: Olivier Nakache, Thierry Binisti, Esther Sittler, François Zimeray, Professeur Jean-Jacques Rein and Jean Mattern
Esther Sittler and François Zimeray

Esther Sittler and François Zimeray

Mrs Sittler prizes the families fighting together the disease and the  doctors  transferring the necessary competence to deliver results which contribute more efficiently than any speech to develop confidence between  people. She prizes, also, the creation of the Collective of the Writers for the dialogue and freedom. Finally she prizes alsowith the ceremony on October 4th, 2012 around Boualem Sansal, while thanking the president of the association for having been able to gather, this evening,  engaged actors, doctors, writers, movie makers, carrying all of a strong message of hope.

Esther Sittler, François Zimmeray, Professor Rein, Jean Mattern

Esther Sittler, François Zimmeray, Professor Rein, Jean Mattern

François Zimeray was willing to be there to share some thoughts about the association. He mentions a recent experience, the day before he was at Drancy, where the Memorial of the Deportation has been erected , in the presence of representatives of the Jewish community and on the initiative of the Imam of Drancy which had invited, for this event, many Imams of France. Drancy Imam, Hassen Chalghoumi pointed out the importance of the dialogue, the importance  of getting to the other. Those a initiatives have to be encouraged, because when some political initiatives failed, only  remain  initiatives by the civil society in France or elsewhere. Beyond the political dead end, one can see that bridges are built between the people, between the communities and that these bridges are so strong. They are all the most necessary as there is only that actually, today, to get ride of prejudices. All that is not only a conflict between Israelis and Palestinians but also a conflict between these two people and the rest of the world. In conclusion and in all sincerity, he thinks that any person defining himself  only as pro-Israeli or pro-Palestinian, meaning he would be in favor of one against the other, is not decent because that does not mean anything and one can be for both sideat the same time and live in a context of peace and serenity.

Jean Mattern explains the initiative of the creation of the Collective of the Writers for dialogue and freedom. While congratulating the writer Shmuel Thierry Meyer for the constitution on this collective, he says that he is stuck by the strength of Boualem Sansal action who stood up in front of the prejudices and which offered its price to the association a Heart for Peace. In addition, he alludes to the Israeli writer Amos Oz who defines his profession of writer by using the expression previously used by François Zimeray “to put himself in the position of the other”. To have the capacity to put yourself in the position of the other can build a bridge such as the creation of the Collective of Writers who are engaged for peace and the action that the association of Muriel Haïm carries out. For peace. He mentions also the concrete action, in Israel, of writers, like Amos Oz, engaged for the dialogue between Israelis and Palestinians.

Thierry Binisti
Thierry Binisti

Thierry Binisti speaks about his meeting with association a Heart for Peace at the time of the projection of his film “A bottle within the sea” which turned into the willingness to support its action  because there was an obvious continuity between what this association was achieving in daily life and what he wanted to express in his movie. Cinema is an extraordinary territory to meet the other and it can give the possibility to the public of having this extraordinary position to be on the two sides at the same time. In fact, Thierry Binisti says he met the association before even discovering it because, unexpectedly, there was an ambulance which was parked in front of the checkpoint between Gaza and Israel and someone explained to him that this ambulance was there to bring young patients, to Hadassah hospital of Jerusalem. He thus wanted to put in the film this ambulance as a symbol of the first way of building bridges. The cinema is an incredible space to meet; it is often ahead of the populations themselves and often sometimes even ahead of the  the politics since one expresses there his dreams and his phantasms. Thierry Binisti feels in phase with all what is done in daily life by the association and translates it in his films knowing that  films remain a long time in the head of people and the fact of discovering the other changes completely the way to look at him.

Olivier Nakache

Olivier Nakache

Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano

Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano

Olivier Nakache is also in the glance of the other. He wonders how to bring closer, to reconcile one with the other.. It’s what he tried to do, with its partner Eric Toledano, in most of their films, in particular in the last one “Untouchable”, success of which took them totally by surprise. The movie was based on reconciliation and on how to succeed to speak to each other. Having strong links with Israel, Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano always wondered how to get engaged  and how to speak up. The words carrying a heavy weight, it is surprised that most of the time light is shed  on negative images in the media. It as is also very surprised that media does not speak enough this kind of initiative. As he is an image maker, he saw one day in the columns of the news paper the  Figaro the image of Professor JJ.Rein with a small child and his veiled mom. This image challenged him at the point to want to do something. Having met Therese Zaydman, a member of the association, they had the desire to go further and shed light on this association. They very happy of being able to support it.

Professor JJ Rein

Professor JJ Rein

Professor JJ.Rein points out that our association has been created 7 years ago and explains what currently occurs in pediatric cardiac surgery at the Hadassah hospital in Jerusalem. He teaches us that cardio-pediatricians not only deal with new born ones but also with the elderly people who had underwent surgery more than 30 years ago, the senior Palestinian we took care being 73 years old. Professor Rein also explains us that approximately 1% of new born suffer from cardiac malformation as results from endogamic marriages which are about 45% in the Arab territories and not only Palestinian because it is the same situation in Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and other territories of the area, for cultural and nonreligious reasons.

Association “a Heart for Peace”: a large heart like that!

He is called Saïf and lives in Palestine, in Ramallah. All he dreamed collapsed when a serious cardiac malformation able to be fatal was diagnosed with its baby. But thanks to association a Heart for Peace, his child will be neat free at the Hadassah hospital of Jerusalem. The child of Saïf will join thus the most 400 children of the West Bank and Gaza looked thanks to a Heart for Peace since the creation of the association in May 2005.

“It was at the time of a travel in Israel with French colleagues, remembers Muriel Haïm, president and member founder of a Heart for Peace. Jean-Jacques Rein, the chief of the paediatric service of cardiology of the Hadassah hospital, told us that he did not make a difference between Palestinian and Israeli patients, in spite of the context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. ” Impressed, she asks him what she can do to help him. Professor Rein explains that he would like to operate 50 additional children a year.

“Like many other countries of the South, the Palestinian Authority concentrates on the primary education care, city medicine and dispensaries”

But for that, the hospital needs money. “Coming back in France, we immediately founded the association, Muriel Haïm continues. We were likely to find quickly the money necessary, and by September 2005, a first child could be operated. ” Approximately 300 Palestinian children are born each year with a congenital malformation of the heart. The high rate of marriages between blood relations (46%), between more or less close cousins, is the cause.

However the Palestinian territories are badly equipped to detect and look after the children reached of heart problems. “Like many other countries of the South, the Palestinian Authority concentrates on the primary education care, city medicine and dispensaries”, explains Muriel Haïm. Moreover, the Palestinian Authority does not have the means yet of setting up a social security. However the paediatric cardiology is extremely expensive. “An operation costs 14,000 €, financed for half by the Hadassah hospital and for half by a Heart for Peace, Muriel Haïm specifies. The families do not have thus anything to pay. In addition, the price of a good equipment of cardiology, in particular for tracking by echography, can go up up to 90,000 €. “

It is in addition impossible to be unaware of the context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The small patients come for 40% from the Gaza Strip, the rest from the West Bank. “We organized ourselves to face the situation of Gaza, details Muriel Haïm. When our correspondent in Gaza diagnoses a child, he contacts the Pr.Rein  or Nael El-Lahham. For the urgent operations, it is necessary to accompany the fax asking for the authorization of pass the two check-points (left Gaza then entered to Israel) of a document specifying the weight, the age, the names and first names of the child and the person accompanies it. The two people are taken along by ambulance until the check-point of Erez. There, they must change ambulance. In the event of urgency, the small patient can get Jerusalem in 3 hours.“

“The families which we help are not any more worry with the idea to come in Hadassah”

Despite everything, the disease brings closer the families. “The mothers are interdependent in front of the disease. In room of intensive care, Israelis and Palestinian are together. When one among cries because of the disease of her child, the others come to comfort it”, Muriel Haïm tells. A Heart for Peace animates also groups of word between Israeli and Palestinian mothers. It also happens that a small Palestinian and a small Israeli share the same room. “The families which we help are not any more worry with the idea to come in Hadassah, adds Muriel Haïm, they know by buzz marketing that they will be well treated. And then the hospital counts Palestinian nurses and doctors. “

In addition, a Heart for Peace is not limited to the financing of surgical operations. Association also ensures a transfer of competence by training Palestinian doctors and technicians (156 in 2012). It also conducts campaigns of information and sensitizing near the general practitioners so that they recognize the families at risk. Nael El-Lahham, a Palestinian doctor that we formed by the association, opened at the end of October a paediatric private clinic of Ramallah. A Heart for Peace will finance part of the budget of the private clinic during 3 years. “The objectl in the long term, it is of course that one does not need more for us”, affirms Muriel Haïm.

The Rotarians of District 1660 were particularly numerous from November 30th to December 2nd during the Forum of the Peace, which was held in Berlin.

President Tanaka recalled that the Rotary Foundation contributes to it, in particular by the committees “Interpays”, which facilitate the humane activities and of peace between the countries, by the program of the purses of peace, of the Foundation Rotary Foundation, and by the eradication of the polio, the most important world initiative of public health of the history, which “showed the capacity that the individuals, the governments and the private partners to get, can have extraordinary results co-operating together. ”

Palestinian children receiving heart treatment in Israel

We are talking about one of these generous and humanitarian initiatives which positively contributes to the israelo-palestinian peace process if not quite pretends resolving the conflict altogether.

The Israeli hospital Hadassah in Jerusalem is admitting a large number of children living in the Gaza strip. In fact, half of them are infants as close to 50% of Palestinian couples are blood-related. As a result, Palestinian children are three times more susceptible to suffer from heart malformations at birth than any other children. If unoperated, these would result in certain death.

Marianne Fraenkel-Gaffré Présidente du Comité Inter Pays France Israël du Rotary International

Cardiovascular surgery is a particularly costly medical unit to run. The Hadassah Hospital is currently funding 50% of the cardiology ward while « Un Cœur pour la Paix » is financing the other half.

It is quite frequent for a Palestinian mother and child to share a room with an Israeli mother and her own child. As they inquire about the health of each other’s baby, a sometimes lifelong bond for peace is formed.

The France-Israel ICC is fully committed to the success of this peace initiative and has entered into a partnership with « Un Cœur pour la Paix ». A concert has been organized with the help of the Rotary Clubs which helped raise EUR 2,500. A series of conferences to be hosted by the clubs from District 1660 (Paris – Ile-de-France West) is now under consideration and members of the Clubs are already talking about allocating some funds.

Saif’s letter

Object: My baby were diagnosed with a heart defects (TGA & VSD)(1)

—– Mail transferd—Send on: monday  novembre 19th 2012 10h19 PM

Dear Sir,

Hope my email finds you well and safe. I write to you from Ramallah- West Bank, my ame is Saif Issa, my wife is pregnant in the 7 month (almost 30 weeks now), it’s our first aby, in fact it’s the dream of my life. since I knew about the pregnancy, my life have been changed dramatically, I built my whole coming life on living with this baby (raising, feeding, cleaning-up, playing, teaching …..).

Dear Sir you couldn’t imagine our happiness, while> we shopping for the baby, tiny clothes, tiny staff, but big size dreams, plans & hopes. I bought him a nice woody cradle with all these toys and music staff, I sited it at a orner in our master room, next to our bed, so he stays very close to us, as we suppose to protect him and raise him safely, this is our responsibility when we decided to bring him to this world. We suppose to keep him healthy and  save to grow and live his life.

Two months ago, the baby were diagnosed with a heart defects (TGA & VSD). This was not only shocking, but also depressing and devastating. Ah! our dreams were tear down, our life stopped there. I searched the internet in a desperate move, where I found a lot of information regarding my baby condition, severa! places, pioneer doctors and medical centers dealing with such cases. But sadly none of these things are in our territories (West Bank). The doctors here told us that this serious case only can be treated at Israeli’s Hospitals, but the costs will be very high. But again my hopes were relived, when I found a video at YouTube talking about your great work with Palestinian kids from Gaza & West Bank, you cannot imagine my feelings, while I am listening to you, to doctors form Hadassah Medical Center and to people of  Heart for Peace program (Dr. MURIEL  HAIM).

I was totally confused between translating to my wife and just dealing with my feelings, knowing that although my insufficient resources and lake of specialized centers and doctors for such rare and complicated condition in my territories, my baby might have a chance to live, in fact we our-self maybe have a chance to live our hopes and dreams for this baby, and the woody cradle might celebrate his resident.

Dear Sir, your help is our only hope, I do not know what to do or where to go, I am totally confused & desperate. My wife and sure my baby looking for me to find a solution, I can see this through my wife’ s eyes. The doctors here say that the baby must be delivered in a well-equipped facility for such cases. Sorne suggested to go to AL-Makkased Hospital in Jerusalem, they have a NICU for such cases, but no surgeon for this kind of rare & complicated surgeries will be available.

Dear Sir, I feel like I committed a horrible crime for this baby, when I decide to bring him to this world. A world which is even not safe for healthy people. At the same time I cannot handle lose him, just I cannot.

Dear Sir,Attached for your kind attention the medical report of my baby. I am looking forward for your help, I need someone to tell me what to do, where to go, or just let the God’s willing to be> done. My wife is expected to give birth by the end of Jan-2013 (last expected date).

Sincerely Yours,

Saif …

Objet : Re: My baby were diagnosed with a heart defects (TGA & VSD) (1)

Dear Dr. Rein,

Hope my email finds you well. First of all I would like to thank you for your prompt response. in fact I knew about Dr. Nael later by an internet search, i found also  that he is one of your honored team members and works in West Bank from Ramallah. I made an appointment at his clinic today evening. He performed an Echo test for the baby’s heart, he has the results. He told us that he will arrange for us the whole process at Hadassah center. In fact he is a nice doctor who helped us in very great way, even the baby discovered to have an additional problem » Small R.V. » but he reassured us that it’s still treatable. Dear Sir, we now know that our baby will be in safe hands. May god bless all of you and keep you all safe and healthy.

Warm & Best Regards. Saif Family.

Testimony of itinérance, a Heart for Peace

During two weeks of the month of August 2012, about twenty old pioneers and caravels from 14 to 17 years, of Scouts and Guides of France, accompanied by their chiefs , traversed Brittany on foot and with bicycle to promote association a Heart for Peace. Having intended Claudia Dansette to explain the objectives, the approachs and the work of association to them, the pioneers and caravels of the caravans of Mennecy and Montgeron wanted to help this association to be done more and to participate in the financing of the operation of a child.

In order to collect money to take part in the financing of the operation of a child, the young people first of all organized a tombola. Each person could help the project by buying a ticket which symbolized one kilometer of their course and especially a step towards the cure of an ill child. Thereafter, they prepared the camp during which they traversed approximately 250 kilometers by alternating walk and bicycle to speak about association to the people that they met and which accommodated them on their ground the evening.

To support “a Heart for Peace” enabled us to go to the meeting of the people whom we come across to explain our project to them, and of course to keep the moral one at the time of the difficult stages!

Numerous articles in the press review

"Rapprocher les peuples israéliens et palestiniens par des actions de santé et d'éducation".

When one comes to mention the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, cynicism and skepticism perturb every action towards peace.
In this part of the world torn by long-term conflicts, hope is sometimes the only thing for men to hang on.
A Heart for Peace, a French non-profit association, has been a real humanistic step standing beyond every prejudice.
