David Grossman and Boualem Sansal together at the European council to launch the call for freedom in the world.

Call for freedom on October 6th by David Grossman and Boualem Sansal

The call for peace, launched on October 6th, from the city hall of Strasbourg by David Grossman and Boualem Sansal, has been one of  the most important  event of the first worldwide forum for democracy, which is an historical moment in the history of Strasbourg.

STRASBOURG APPEAL

The 20th century saw the powers of the Old Continent, inflamed by nationalisms and colonial greediness, plunge the world twice in the most monstrous wars. With the Shoah, which will forever remain painful and indelible in our memories, humanity reached the extreme limit of barbarity. From Yalta, in February 1945, until the fall of the Berlin Wall, in November 1989, the world was caught in a Cold War between East and West that made humanity live under the constant threat of a nuclear catastrophy. InCuba, in October 1962, exactly 50 years ago, the missiles were indeed armed and the countdown was launched. This century that witnessed all the evil and the worst of threats, finally saw the light and managed to start a long journey towards peace. The Franco-German reconciliation was an essential step for this; it opened the way for European construction and thereby the strengthening of a peace process in the world. In this move, writers were among the first and the most committed. Some of them are among the signatories of this appeal; they were involved in these historic events that revived hope. We would like to particularly welcome them. But the peace project involved only the West. We had forgotten about the rest of the world, the dozens of countries gathered at the periphery, which yet accounted for more than four-fifths of the world population, delivered to underdevelopment and dictatorships. Because peace was not for all, it could not be sustainable. And here we are again faced with immense dangers. Pollution and global warming may soon destroy as much  as the nuclear storm threatened to do in the old terror scheme. Poverty, disease, endemic delinquency will take care of the rest. Terrorism, a shocking novelty at this scale, advances at an appalling speed; and the ideologies that feed it attain new ways, in particular through the instrumentalisation of religions to serve political purposes. The developments in some countries make us fear the worst. Barbarian fundamentalism rooted in TalibanAfghanistanhas continued to expand and cause backlash in states of quasi-war in the rest of the world. Spots of tension multiply, in particular in Africa, and the pockets of radical Islamism that develop in many Arab and Muslim countries, and even in democratic countries far from the epicentre, threat to spread all over the world. Already now, basic values such as freedom of religion and of conscience are in danger. Faced with this, the international community remains incredibly inefficient.Americaand Europe dither,RussiaandChinapractice blocking, thus paralysing any possible action from the United-Nations. The “Arab Spring” has created hopes and opportunities, especially as regards democratisation, but has also unleashed enormous internal tensions in the Arab and Muslim countries, which keep worsening and pushing towards extremism. The emergence of very organized Islamist parties, with heavily armed militias, and their coming to power in these countries are a sign of the movement towards fundamentalism. In the looming chaos,Iranaccelerates its nuclear programme to achieve its hegemonic pretensions on a political, military and religious level, and Arab countries in the region might be driven to follow a similar path. In this context, Israel is more directly threatened than ever. Faced with a complex and dangerous situation, it might be tempted to act alone. The decision to strikeIranis on the table, even if by doing soIsraelmight find itself on the edge of existential danger. The already fragile situation in theMiddle Eastwill deteriorate. Once again, the peace-loving Palestinians and Israelis will pay for the pursuit of interests they are not a part of. Israel maintains the Palestinians under occupation for more than 45 years, and this inhuman and immoral situation must stop. Both sides are putting unrealistic conditions to resume negotiations, and meanwhile the Israeli government is building more and more settlements, which prevent achieving sustainable peace. We urge both parties to enter immediately into sincere and serious negotiations. The present blockage endangers peace in the region and in the world. It is urgent that the international community intervenes firmly to bring the Iranian nuclear programme under control and steadily commits to the resolution of the Israel-Palestine conflict, pushing the parties to immediately establish a true direct dialogue, leading as soon as possible to the creation of a Palestinian state next to the State of Israel, both with secure borders, on the basis of painful compromises for both parts though necessary for peace, such as the abandonment of settlements or their exchange against land, the renouncement to the right of return of the 1948 refugees, the sharing of Jerusalem. This is still – but maybe not for long – a possible solution and there are men and women on both sides capable of achieving it. Let us help them do so. In Syria, the Arab Spring has resulted in a crisis of exceptional severity, which threatens the country itself and its people’s very existence. Al-Assad’s regime is methodically killing his people. Sixteen months – and almost 30.000 deaths – after the start of the Syrian revolution, he continues his crimes in complete tranquillity, encouraged firstly byIran,RussiaandChina, and secondly by the hesitations and procrastination of the international community. Human consciousness will long remember the aftermath of this tragedy. Against this background, we writers are signing our commitment to peace and declaring the following :

  • Peace is a common and irreplaceable good and its defence is a common obligation. By making it everyone’s affair, we can prevent that the global peace we strive for may end-up being the peace for some at the cost of others.
  • Writers have their part in this fight and we hereby express our determination to take it firmly and objectively. We urge all writers in the world to join us. Together, we can influence decision makers and public opinion and thereby also the course of events, ensuring that the values of peace are strengthened throughout the world. Our methods in this fight are literature, debate and vigilance. Maybe it is not much, but it is our way of maintaining our dignity in a world of violence and cynicism.
  • The global gathering of writers for peace is not a political party and does not intend to interfere in the internal political affairs of a specific country. This is each one’s affair according to his or her own personal convictions and commitments. However, peace and the values that underpin it – human rights, democracy and culture – are not only internal affairs : they are universal. This is why the gathering will express itself on these issues. It will do so without concession. Here is its scope; there is its line.
  • The gathering works as a network, as wide as possible. It will provide itself a secretariat to optimize the flow of information among its members and the organization of its actions. Every two years, it will appoint a “primus inter pares” to represent the gathering and manage its activities.
  • The gathering will, as soon as possible, set up working groups to formulate proposals – and develop actions – for addressing the most urgent situations.
  • The gathering will seek all possible synergies with national and international      organizations for which peace and culture are the missions.

Boualem Sansal, prix du roman arabe, récompensé par un mystérieux donateur

Par Camille Poirier et (LEXPRESS.fr), publié le

Boualem Sansal during the handing-over of the Price of the Arab novel at Gallimard on June 21st, 2012.
Marianne Payot/LEXPRESS.fr

A Heart for Peace

During a private trip with our friends De Guillebon who were willing to discover Israel and particularly Jerusalem, we had to go to Hadassah hospital; it is Hadassah which receives the donations you are generous enough to give to this association. We have been welcome by Prof. Jean-Jacques Rein, head of department of pediatric cardiology, who is the ‘hand which cures” of A Heart for Peace. Local action: Overheads 1% Sponsoring for 50% of the cost of hospitalization for a child and his mother total cost 14000 euros “Hadassah hospital has been created in 1912” explains Prof. Rein. Its philosophy has always been to take care of every patient whatever his nationality or religion.” Since 2005, every week, one Palestinian child undergoes heart surgery. Over 430 today The association trains Palestinian physicians locally. We are against the fact that physicians come to perform surgery and leave, says Prof. Rein, our modus operandi is to develop competencies locally where they are needed” In the coming months, a Palestinian physician trained at Hadassah will begin working in a brand new cardiologic center which will be opened in Ramallah in the West bank. The objective is that this center will become independent within 3 years and will develop local medical expertise the association provides material. For the children: a pediatric department, decorated with animals in order to create a warm environment for the children A gymnasium and a school for the children to be able to keep up with their educational program when hospitalized.         Meetings and events organized to promote contacts between Israeli and Palestinian mothers. 12 brand new intensive care unit rooms will open with bed for the mother For Dr. Muriel Haïm, president founder of A Heart for Peace “the goal of our association is to  disappear, that will mean that we fully achieved the transfer of knowledge. Meanwhile, other projects are being evaluated because M Haim has only one wish: save the children and put together those people Let’s go back to Pr. Rein A great man, physically as mentally A bearded giant, his hand is strong but open in a sign of fraternity. I imagine the babies and little children he saves their life. His warm eyes and his warmth make them feel rapidly secure as well as their mother This great man, who is so busy, was humble enough to apologize when he had to leave us to go the surgery room! He has the simplicity of the bright people! He is one of those men whose profession is their passion. He is committed to the people. Cure children without any difference due to race, origin or religion and believe and participate in putting closer people for the Peace of the world. Isabelle, communication manager summarized in one sentences the spirit of Hadassah members in general of particularly of Pr rein:

Here disease is the sole enemy

Saint-Aubin, a city which supports us since many year, its mayor Mr. de Guillebon and one supporter Mr. A. Aumaître went in Hadassah to understand the program by themselves with their spouses. They met with Pr.  Rein. A big thank you from the children to whom they gave toys. In Conclusion I thank Saint-Aubin city and all of you generous donors who were generous during the Village event. You will have understood that your donations are only and completely used to support a noble cause.

The children

Today, 419 Palestinian children underwent surgery free of charge at Israeli Hadassah hospital performed by mixed team and Israeli and Palestinian physicians. The last child is a baby girl. Leila was few days old when she came from Bethlehem for an intra-auricular  communication. With her close heart surgery, no need for respiratory rehabilitation, no scare and an infectious risk reduced at a minimum level. Leila is now back home in a very good health.

Meeting with Muriel Haim

Thanks to our partnership with Reader’s Digest, the Channel of Heart was able to meet Muriel Haim.  6 years ago she created the association « A Heart for Peace » to allow the Palestinian children to undergo heart surgery in Israel . In the long term, the objective would be to create adequate structures so that children can be taken care at home, in Palestine. « A Heart for Peace » is also a means of promoting the linkages between families and the physicians Palestinians and Israelis. Since 2005, more than 400 children could be operated. “In May 2005, during a trip of the Association of the doctors Jews from France to Jerusalem, Muriel Haïm discovers the work of professor Jean-Jacques Rein. This one, at the head of the pediatric service of cardiology of the Hadassah hospital, perform surgery for children suffering from congenital cardiopathy, whatever their nationality and their origin. But the needs are enormous: important consanguinity in the West Bank and in Gaza makes that each year, at least 300 Palestinian children are born with cardiac malformations (three times more than in the general population). Jean-Jacques Rein needs money to operate at least 50 children moreover each year and to train Palestinian doctors. An operation costs between 12.000 and 14.000 euros. Muriel Haïm created the association A Heart for Peace to finance surgery. “It is necessary to create territories to speak to each other . “Medicine is one of these territories”, said the one who is from now on director of communications and  public affairs of the laboratories Boehringer Ingelheim. And then, as Dr. Haïm remembers Alexandra, she adds: “That will not change the world. But it goes in the right direction.”

A Heart of Peace, stretching a hand?

March 14, 2012 Woel Farrah is an echocardiographist  in the West Bank. For the first time in his life,  few days ago, he left his land for a trip to France. He joined a meeting  of the association, A Heart for Peace, which presented its 6 year achievement at a symposium held in the Senat,. The association participates in the financing of surgical interventions for  small Palestinian children  suffering from congenital heart diseases at  Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem. The association also trains Palestinian physicians as Woel Farrah. This « hand stretched out to peace » will allow Palestinian people to get their independence in the screening and even the prevention of those pathologies. “ Hadassah hospital was established in 1912, » explained  Pr. Jean-Jacques Rein, head of the department of pediatric cardiology. « Its philosophy  has always been to take care of all the patients, regardless of their nationality and religion. With the association, we are in this philosophy “. A Heart for Peace is an French association, which cofounds the surgeries for these young Palestinians. They undergo surgery in Jerusalem, by Israeli doctors. However, the association also trains local doctors, at Hadassah hospital. « We are opposed to the fact that physician come to perform surgery  and then go back home » continues Jean-Jacques Rein. « Our way to proceed is to develop skills  where they are located.  Dr Woel Farrah in is an emblematic exemple. In the months to come, he wil begin to work in a new center of pediatric cardiology for screening and treatment, opened in the West Bank. Privileged witness of these achievements, Pr. Alain Grimfeld, president of the national advisory committee on ethics (CCNE), is very respectful of the work done. « A Heart for Peace puts into practice the foundations of the ethics of the sciences of life and health. Namely the charity, justice, autonomy that It confers to children – and the solidarity of course. “This is an example to imitate and to promote “, he explained. For the Dr. Muriel Haïm, president and founder of A Heart for Peace, « the goal is that our association disappears. It will mean that we have fully succeeded in the transfer of knowledge ». DIJON

A benefit concert

for « A Heart for Peace »

The France-Israel association, the alliance General Koenig of Dijon has organized a concert of David Serero for the benefit of the association, A Heart for Peace.

The France-Israel association, the goal of which is « to make known the truths of Israel » is particularly active in Dijon. Its President Monique Thébault, among her many actions (we remember the booths in the city for Guilad Shalit), wants to help « a heart for Peace » and organized, before Pessah, a unique charitable concert,  with the young and talented opera singer, the baritone David Serero. The association, A Heart for Peace, established in 2005 by Dr. Muriel Haïm and Professor Rein, head of service in pediatric cardiology at Hadassah hospital in Jerusalem, has for purpose, beyond  saving the lives of children, « to bring closer the Palestinian and Israeli peoples by the actions of health and education. Each week, a Palestinian child suffering from congenital heart disease undergoes surgery at Hadassah performed by Israeli and Palestinians physicians”. David Serero accompanied by his pianist virtuoso David Lehman, has already given more than 500 concerts in the world. In larger audience, certainly, but also, as he explains in an interview in the local newspaper “Le Bien Public » in each country or I played, I am trying to stop in a hospital for children in order to offer them with a concert ». That evening, in the former chapel of the Lycée Carnot of Dijon, in the presence of officials of the town and the regional council, opera, Broadway songs and music of the world made the spectators delighted. With all of his talent, but also with all his heart, the singer was able to communicate to this assembly his solidarity with « A Heart for Peace ». Laurence NGUYEN

A Heart for Peace in the press. The children Over 405 Palestinian children underwent surgery, recently Noam also came from the West Bank to undergo surgery. Noam suffered from a very severe congenital cardiopathy. Today Noam is fine and back home in the West Bank. D.M was born at Yata (near Hebron, west bank) on 27/9/2011 after uneventful l gestation and delivery with a normal birth weight of 3.240 Kg. At 3 days of age, he was referred to Yata Hospital with jaundice and difficulty of breathing. A heart murmur was noticed and Dr Nael El Laham who was called upon to examine the baby found severe narrowing of the aortic valve (which convey blood from the heart main chamber to the body) and severely reduced cardiac function. He was referred to the Islamic Makased hospital of Jerusalem for urgent balloon dilation of the valve which was unsuccessful. The baby was then returned to Yata hospital where his breathing difficulty and heart failure increased to such a point that he was again hospitalized at the Palestinian Red Crescent Hospital of Jerusalem to be finally transferred at Hadassah at the age of 3 months. Echo performed at his arrival in Hadassah’s pediatric intensive care unit showed a poorly contracting left ventricle with severe narrowing of the aortic valve.  Due to his critical condition we immediately performed percutaneous balloon dilation of this narrowed valve which resulted in relief of the pressure gradient through the valve with immediate improvement of the heart function. Six days later, D.M. was discharged home (Yata village) in good condition.   Since then, he is doing extremely well, thriving and developing normally, as assessed by by Dr Nael El Laham’s follow-up.

Woel Farrah is a doctor echocardiographist in the West Bank. For the first time of his life, a few days ago, he left its ground for a voyage in France. He joined a meeting of association there a Heart for the Peace, which presented its assessment of stage at the Senate, after six years of existence. This one which takes part in the financing of surgical operations on small Palestinians reached of cardiac malformations congenital at the Hadassah Hospital of Jerusalem, also trains doctors. And for example Woel Farrah. This « hand tended towards peace » must make it possible the Palestinian populations to conquer their independence in tracking even the prevention of these malformations. « The Hadassah hospital was created in 1912 « , explains us the PR Jean-Jacques Rein, which directs the pediatric service of cardiology from there « Its tradition always was to deal with all the patients, whatever their nationality and their religion. With association, we conform to this pattern. A Heart for Peace is an association of French right, which cofinances the surgical operations from which these young Palestinians profit. They are operated in Jerusalem, by Israeli doctors. However, association trains also local doctors, on place « We are opposed to the fact that doctors come to operate then set out again « , continues Jean-Jacques Rein. “Our way of proceeding, it is to form competences where they are. And where they are missing « .

Surgical operations and transfers of competences

Dr. Woel Farrah is an example emblematic. Besides in the months which come, he will take its functions in a very new center of tracking and treatment in pediatric cardiology, soon open in the West Bank.

A HEART FOR PEACE

Association wants to bring closer the people Israeli and Palestinian thanks to actions in the fields’ health and education. There are many sick Palestinian children in the West Bank and in Gaza whereas there is no pediatric cardiac surgery (very expensive) on the spot: since 2005, the Hadassah hospital is committed ensuring a half of the financing, very specialized surgical operations, a Heart for Peace finances other half.www.uncoeurpourlapaix.org/. Muriel Haïm is the president of association « a heart for peace « . This French association with no lucrative goal, created in 2006, falls under a resolutely humanistic step. Its goal is to bring closer the Palestinian and Israeli people by actions in the field health and education. « A heart for peace  » affirms that: “the health of a child is a cause to be placed beyond all the discords ».Edito:The all small ones initially To overcome skepticism, to balance the prejudices, to whistle the pause of a dirty war to repair and look after the heart of the children, it is the work of Doctor Muriel Haïm. The President of the association « a Heart for Peace » is not woman to be satisfied traversed way. It remains so much to make! In 6 years, with her team and thanks to the work on the spot of the professor Jean-Jacques Rein, it is nearly 400 small Palestinians who were saved. Children originating in the West Bank and Gaza, all reached of a congenital cardiac malformation. As there is no Social security and that the cardiac surgery concerns a very expensive medical specialist, Muriel Haïm multiplies the media interventions. History to sensitize the greatest number with its combat and to carry the voice of her « kids » like she says. Because this humanistic action, of course, is not free. Each operation costs approximately 14 000 euros. The Hadassah hospital in Jerusalem finances of it half, the remainder is with the load of association. The support of the private individuals and the sympathizers brings the essential complement. Muriel Haïm plait itself has to repeat the word of a nurse in intensive treatment room: «here, the enemy, it is the disease ». With the bedside of a sick child, neither political tensions neither hatred nor nothing of other that the hope a cure. Why? Because screening in the West Bank is doing better and better. In this program, every month about 100 echocardiographies are performed in Hebron, Bethlehem, Ramallah and Kalkyliah. More and more children are diagnosed and treated, it is as simple as that, 100 echocardiographies per month, 1200 per year split between screening echocadiographies and post surgery follow up ones. This will allow some children to be followed up at home instead of being hospitalized at Hadassah hospital.

hospitalization in Westbank

At Red Crescent Palestinian hospital, a 3 days old baby, Mohamed, was hospitalized in intensive care unit for pulmonary hypertension and asphyxia at birth. Before, a baby with such status of health should have been hospitalized at Hadassah hospital, today with the set-up of the echocardiography program for screening and follow up, now Mohamed can be treated in the West Bank which makes life easier for his family.Transfer of knowledge becomes to prove efficacious. When I was there, his mother had just left to take care of her other 3 children and his grandfather was just coming in.
